Flourishing in Jesus
What do we mean by flourishing in Jesus? By God’s grace, we want to see Jesus transforming lives and renewing the South Bay. But how? As most clearly demonstrated on the cross, the love of Jesus meets us in our weakness. That love was evident throughout his entire life, death, and resurrection. And that love transforms how we think, feel and live. The more we see Jesus loving us, the more we are made like him.
That love is very counterintuitive: Jesus didn’t seek happiness through promoting himself at someone’s expense, but instead lifted others up at his own expense. It cost him to love – and he considered us worth it! And that is where flourishing in Christ begins, discovering how deeply God loves you.
And once you’ve discovered that joy, it’s uncontainable. Much like a newly engaged couple, getting that new job, or getting news of relief from the doctor, that news is too wonderful to keep to yourself. Jesus’ love was not meant to be kept quiet but shared with the world. And how does that happen? The same way he loved us – lifting up others at our own expense.
That’s what we want to share with the South Bay: if God has so loved us, we want to receive that love, thrive in it daily, and share it with everyone around us.
Throughout the Bible, God sets apart leaders to care for and serve His people, yet leadership in the Bible is distinctively different. Leaders in the church are called to serve, under God, to equip and build up others (Ephesians 4:11-12). The Bible lays out two main offices of leadership in the local church: elders and deacons.
The biblical picture of elders is found in 1 Timothy 3, Acts 20, and Titus 1. At King’s Cross, elders are trained to see themselves primarily as shepherds (1 Peter 5) who lead, feed, know, and protect those entrusted to their care.
The biblical picture of deacons is found in Acts 6 and 1 Timothy 3. The title deacon comes from the Greek word for “servant.” Deacons at King’s Cross serve the church in a variety of capacities. They assist the elders of the church in diverse areas such as the Finance Team, Operations, Mercy Ministry, and Pastoral Care.
“Whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

We subscribe to the Westminster Confession of Faith. Below is a very abbreviated statement of our core beliefs:
- The Bible is God’s Word. It reveals His immeasurable love for us and how simply to live in His grace. (2 Tim.3:16)
- There is only one God, in three persons: the Father, Son & Holy Spirit. (Dt.6:4; Mt.28:19)
- All humans are broken and cannot save themselves. We need a Savior. (Rom.3:10-12)
- Jesus Christ, the God-man, lived the life we could not, died the death we deserved and won new life for us in His resurrection from the grave. (2 Cor.5:21)
- The cross tells us two things: a) I deserve that death. b) He was willing to die for me. In other words, I’m worse off than I dared to imagine, but… at the very same time, I am more loved than I ever dared to hope. (Rom.5:8)
- Since we can’t save ourselves, salvation is God’s work alone. (Eph.2:8-9)
- The Holy Spirit lives in God’s people and leads them more & more toward Christ. (Jn.16:13; 1 Cor.3:15)
- Everything we do is to be done for God’s glory. (1 Cor.10:31)
- God is faithful to His people not simply as individuals but also as families & communities according to His promises. (Dt.29:29; Ex.20:4-6)
- Jesus will return to receive His people to Himself. (Acts 1:11)
