PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in
linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial
custom of the Jews.
John 19:40

But God shows his love for us in that while we
were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8

…how much more will the blood of Christ,
who through the eternal Spirit offered himself
    without blemish to God,
purify our conscience from dead works
    to serve the living God!
Hebrews 9:14

When I saw him,
I fell at his feet as though dead.
But he laid his right hand on me, saying,
“Fear not, I am the first and the last,
    and the living one.
I died, and behold I am alive forevermore,
and I have the keys of Death and Hades.
Revelation 1:17-18

WELCOME & CALL TO WORSHIP

I waited patiently for the Lord;

he inclined to me and heard my cry.
He drew me up from the pit of destruction,
    out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
    making my steps secure.
He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.

Psalm 40:1-3a

SONG

Jesus Paid it All

[Verse 1]
I hear the Savior say
Thy strength indeed is small
Child of weakness, watch and pray
Find in Me thine all in all

[Chorus]
Jesus paid it all
All to Him I owe
Sin had left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow

[Verse 2]
Lord, now indeed I find
Thy power and Thine alone
Can change the leper’s spots
and melt the heart of stone

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
And when before the throne
I stand in Him complete
“Jesus died my soul to save”
My lips shall still repeat

[Chorus]

SONG

King of Kings

[Verse 1]
In the darkness we were waiting
Without hope, without light
‘Til from heaven You came running
There was mercy in Your eyes

To fulfill the law and prophets
To a virgin came the word
From a throne of endless glory
To a cradle in the dirt

[Chorus]
Praise the Father, praise the Son
Praise the Spirit, three in one
God of glory, Majesty
Praise forever to the King of Kings

[Verse 2]
To reveal the kingdom coming
And to reconcile the lost
To redeem the whole creation
You did not despise the cross

For even in your suffering
You saw to the other side
Knowing this was our salvation
Jesus for our sake you died

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
And the morning that You rose
All of heaven held its breath
Till that stone was moved for good
For the Lamb had conquered death

And the dead rose from their tombs
And the angels stood in awe
For the souls of all who’d come
To the Father are restored

And the Church of Christ was born
Then the Spirit lit the flame
Now this gospel truth of old
Shall not kneel, shall not faint

By His blood and in His name
In His freedom I am free
For the love of Jesus Christ
Who has resurrected me

[Chorus]

RESPONSIVE READING

Elder:
What shall we say then? Are we to continue in
sin that grace may abound?

Congregation:
By no means! How can we who died to sin still
live in it?

Do you not know that all of us who have been
baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his
death?

We were buried therefore with him by baptism
into death, in order that — just as Christ was
raised from the dead by the glory of the Father
— we too might walk in newness of life.

For if we have been united with him in a
death like his, we shall certainly be united with
him in a resurrection like his.

We know that our old self was crucified with
him in order that the body of sin might be
brought to nothing, so that we would no longer
be enslaved to sin.

For one who has died has been set free from
sin.

Now if we have died with Christ, we believe
that we will also live with him.

We know that Christ, being raised from the
dead, will never die again; death no longer has
dominion over him.

For the death he died he died to sin, once for
all, but the life he lives he lives to God.

So you also must consider yourselves dead
to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Romans 6:1-11

SONG

Jesus Shall Reign

[Verse 1]
Jesus shall reign wherever the sun
Does its successive journeys run
His kingdom stretch from shore to shore
‘Til sun shall rise and set no more

[Verse 2]
Blessings abound wherever He reigns
The prisoner leaps to loose his chains
The weary find eternal rest
And all the sons of want are blessed

[Chorus]
To our King be highest praise
Rising through eternal days
Just and faithful, He shall reign
Jesus shall reign

[Verse 3]
People and realms of every tongue
Dwell on His love with sweetest song
And infant voices shall proclaim
Their early blessings on His name

[Chorus]

[Verse 4]
Let every creature rise and bring
Blessing and honor to our King
Angels descend with songs again
And Earth repeats the loud “Amen!”

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Missionary Visit: One of our missionary families, Luke and Amy, will be visiting with us next weekend. The goal of our time together is not simply to hear from them, but to deepen our partnership in the Gospel. As we hear more of what God is doing globally, not only will it enable us better to know and pray for Kingdom work throughout the world, but also to see the parallels for us as we seek to love the South Bay.

Youth Group Retreat: The annual summer youth retreat is the first weekend of August. Let’s be praying for this retreat, particularly that the Lord would both draw and deepen the faith of our students and their friends. We are thankful for Johnny (and the youth volunteers) for all of the ways they invest in the lives of our youth. It is a joy to see them come alongside parents as they walk with our youth toward Jesus.

SERMON
“Burying Jesus”
Mark 15:39-47

39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him,
saw that in this way he breathed his last,
he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”

40 There were also women
    looking on from a distance,
among whom were Mary Magdalene,
and Mary the mother of James the younger
    and of Joses, and Salome.

41 When he was in Galilee,
they followed him and ministered to him,
and there were also many other women
who came up with him to Jerusalem.

42 And when evening had come,
since it was the day of Preparation,
that is, the day before the Sabbath,
43 Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member
of the council, who was also himself
looking for the kingdom of God,
took courage and went to Pilate
and asked for the body of Jesus.

44 Pilate was surprised to hear
that he should have already died.
And summoning the centurion,
he asked him whether he was already dead.
45 And when he learned from the centurion
    that he was dead,
he granted the corpse to Joseph.

46 And Joseph bought a linen shroud,
    and taking him down,
wrapped him in the linen shroud
and laid him in a tomb
that had been cut out of the rock.

And he rolled a stone
against the entrance of the tomb.
47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses
    saw where he was laid.

Mark 15:39-47 (ESV)

SONG

His Glory Appears

[Verse]
You gave me hope
You made me whole
At the cross

You took my place
You showed me grace
At the cross where You died for me

[Chorus]
And His glory appears
Like the light from the sun
Age to age, He shines
Oh, look to the skies
Hear the angels cry
Singing Holy is the Lord

BENEDICTION

Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
    his understanding is unsearchable.
He gives power to the faint,
and to him who has no might he increases strength.

Even youths shall faint and be weary,
    and young men shall fall exhausted;
but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
    they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40:28-31
