PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

As it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
1 Peter 1:16

“You become like what you look at.”
– Anonymous

“Christian holiness is not a matter of
painstaking conformity to the individual
precepts of an external law code; it is rather a
question of the Holy Spirit’s producing His Fruit
in the life, reproducing those graces which were
seen in the perfection of the life of Christ.”
– F.F. Bruce

“The Bible as a whole speaks more of God’s
holiness than of His love.”
– Walter Chantry

“A true love of God must begin with a delight in
his holiness, and not with a delight in any other
attribute; for no other attribute is truly lovely
without this.”
– Jonathan Edwards

“Holiness involves friendship with God. There
has to be a moment in our relationship with
God when he ceases to be a Sunday
acquaintance and becomes a weekday friend.”
– Basil Hume

“Now, with God’s help, I shall become myself.”
– Soren Kierkegaard

“Holiness is the goal of our redemption.”
– J.I. Packer

“There are no happy disobedient Christians. If
you are content in running from God’s will for
you, you have reason to doubt that Christ’s life
is in you.”
– Rankin Wilbourne

WELCOME & CALL TO WORSHIP

Sing aloud to God our strength;
shout for joy to the God of Jacob!
Raise a song; sound the tambourine,
the sweet lyre with the harp.
Psalm 81:1-2

SONG

Child of Love

[Verse 1]
I was walking the wayside, lost on a lonely road
I was chasing the high life, trying to satisfy my soul
All the lies I believed in, left me crying like the rain
Then I saw lightning from Heaven, and I’ve never been the same

[Chorus]
I’m gonna climb a mountain
I’m gonna shout about it
I am a child of love
I found a world of freedom
I found a friend in Jesus
I am a child of love

[Verse 3]
I’ve felt the sting of the fire, but I saw You in the flames
Just when I thought it was over, You broke me out of the grave

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
Nothing can change the way You love me
Nothing can change the way
I belong to You, yes, I do
Nothing can separate

SONG

Only a Holy God

[Verse 1]
Who else commands all the hosts of heaven
Who else could make every king bow down
Who else could whisper and darkness trembles
Only a Holy God

[Verse 2]
What other beauty demands such praises
What other splendor outshines the sun
What other majesty rules with justice
Only a Holy God

[Chorus]
Come and behold Him
The One and the Only
Cry out, sing holy
Forever a Holy God
Come and worship the Holy God

[Verse 3]
What other glory consumes like fire
What other power can raise the dead
What other name remains undefeated
Only a Holy God

[Chorus]

[Verse 4]
Who else could rescue me from my failing
Who else would offer His only Son
Who else invites me to call Him Father
Only a Holy God
Only my Holy God

[Chorus]

RESPONSIVE READING

Heidelberg Catechism #88-#90

Leader:
What is the true repentance or conversion of man?

All:
It is the dying of the old nature
and the coming to life of the new.

Leader:
What is the dying of the old nature?

All:
It is to grieve with heartfelt sorrow
that we have offended God by our sin,
and more and more to hate it and flee from it.

Leader:
What is the coming to life of the new nature?

All:
It is a heartfelt joy in God through Christ,
and a love and delight to live
according to the will of God in all good works.

SONG

Never See the End

[Verse 1]
Where can we run, where can we hide
That You will not find us?
Deepest of depths, highest of heights
Your love, it chases us
No matter where we’ve been, no matter what we’ve done
We can’t escape Your love

[Chorus]
We will never see the end
We will never see the end of Your goodness

[Verse 2]
Though we pass through the fire or we pass through the flood
You will be with us
Though we walk through the valley, the darkest of night
Your love will be our light
And when we are in plenty or we are in want
You will always be enough

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
And in our darkest hours, on our hardest days
We do not have to be afraid
For You will never leave, You will not forsake
The promises You have made

[Chorus]

SERMON
“An Orphan’s Life #2″

See what kind of love the Father has given to us,
    that we should be called children of God;
    and so we are.
The reason why the world does not know us
is that it did not know him.

Beloved, we are God’s children now,
    and what we will be has not yet appeared;
but we know that when he appears
    we shall be like him,
because we shall see him as he is.
And everyone who thus hopes in him
purifies himself as he is pure.

Everyone who makes a practice of sinning
also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.
You know that he appeared in order to take away sins,
and in him there is no sin.
No one who abides in him keeps on sinning;
no one who keeps on sinning
has either seen him or known him.

Little children, let no one deceive you.
   Whoever practices righteousness is righteous,
   as he is righteous.
Whoever makes a practice of sinning
is of the devil, for the devil
has been sinning from the beginning.
The reason the Son of God appeared
was to destroy the works of the devil.

No one born of God makes a practice of sinning,
   for God’s seed abides in him;
and he cannot keep on sinning,
because he has been born of God.

10 By this it is evident who are the children of God,
and who are the children of the devil:
whoever does not practice righteousness
   is not of God,
nor is the one who does not love his brother.
1 John 3:1-10 (ESV)

For freedom Christ has set us free;
   stand firm therefore,
