Sunday Morning 10am
Welcome, we’re glad you’re here. Our vision echoes the Lord’s prayer: may it be “in the South Bay, as it is in heaven.” We yearn to see people flourishing in Jesus. Join us in the worship of our Lord.
PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP
The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as
some count slowness, but is patient toward you,
not wishing that any should perish, but that all
should reach repentance.
2 Peter 3:9
By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning
events as yet unseen, in reverent fear
constructed an ark for the saving of his
household. By this he condemned the world and
became an heir of the righteousness that comes
by faith.
Hebrews 11:7
“So just as Noah was saved by the ark, Christ –
being the true Ark – saves those who come to
him.”
– Justin Martyr, c. AD 155
“Just as the ark was the means of deliverance
for Noah and his family, so Christ…delivers
those who come to Him.”
– Iraneaus, c. AD 180
“For the ark is a type of the church, and the
waters of the flood symbolize the waters of
baptism, through which we were saved… Christ
is the true Ark, who brings us safely through
the floods of this world.”
– Clement of Alexandria, c.AD 200
“The ark signifies Christ and the Church. In the
midst of the deluge of sin and death, the ark
was the only place of refuge, just as Christ is
the only refuge for sinners.”
– Martin Luther
“Those who were in the ark were saved, and
those outside were lost. In the same way, those
who are in Christ are saved, and those who
reject Him are lost.”
– CS Lewis, ‘Mere Christianity’
WELCOME & CALL TO WORSHIP
a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling.
SONG
It Came Upon a Midnight Clear
It came upon a midnight clear that glorious song of old
From angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold
Peace on the earth, goodwill to men from heaven’s all gracious King!
The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing.
Yet with the woes of sin and strife the world hath suffered long
Beneath the angel-strain have rolled two thousand years of wrong
And man, at war with man, hears not the love song which they bring
O hush the noise, ye men of strife, and hear the angels sing
For lo! the days are hastening on, by prophets seen of old
When with the ever-circling years shall come the time foretold
When peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling
And all the world give back the song which now the angels sing
It came upon a midnight clear that glorious song of old
From angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold
Peace on the earth, goodwill to men from heaven’s all gracious King
The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing.
SONG
What Child is This?
[Verse 1]
What Child is this who, laid to rest
On Mary’s lap is sleeping
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping?
[Chorus]
This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste, to bring Him laud
The Babe, the Son of Mary
[Verse 2]
Why lies He in such mean estate
Where ox and lamb are feeding?
Good Christian, fear for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.
[Chorus]
[Verse 3]
So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh
Come peasant, king, to own Him
The King of kings salvation brings
Let loving hearts enthrone Him
[Chorus]
SCRIPTURE READING
Being asked by the Pharisees
when the kingdom of God would come,
he answered them,
“The kingdom of God is not coming in ways
that can be observed, nor will they say,
‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold,
the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.”
And he said to the disciples,
“The days are coming when you will desire
to see one of the days of the Son of Man,
and you will not see it.
And they will say to you,
‘Look, there!’ or ‘Look, here!’
Do not go out or follow them.
For as the lightning flashes
and lights up the sky from one side to the other,
so will the Son of Man be in his day.
But first he must suffer many things
and be rejected by this generation.
Just as it was in the days of Noah,
so will it be in the days of the Son of Man.
They were eating and drinking
and marrying and being given in marriage,
until the day when Noah entered the ark,
and the flood came and destroyed them all.
Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot —
they were eating and drinking,
buying and selling, planting and building,
but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom,
fire and sulfur rained from heaven
and destroyed them all —
so will it be
on the day when the Son of Man is revealed.
Luke 17:20-30
SONG
O Little Town of Bethlehem
[Verse 1]
O little town of Bethlehem
How still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by
Yet in the dark street shineth
The everlasting Light
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight
[Verse 2]
For Christ is born of Mary,
and gathered all above
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wond’ring love
O morning stars, together
Proclaim the holy birth
and praises sing to God the King
And peace to men on earth
[Verse 3]
O holy Child of Bethlehem
Descend to us, we pray
Cast out our sin and enter in
Be born in us today
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell
O come to us, abide with us
Our Lord Emmanuel!
[Verse 1]

SERMON
“The Ark”
5 The Lord saw that the wickedness of man
was great in the earth,
and that every intention of the thoughts
of his heart was only evil continually.
6 And the Lord regretted that he had made man
on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.
7 So the Lord said, “I will blot out man
whom I have created from the face of the land,
man and animals and creeping things
and birds of the heavens,
for I am sorry that I have made them.”
8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
9 These are the generations of Noah.
Noah was a righteous man,
blameless in his generation.
Noah walked with God.
10 And Noah had three sons,
Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11 Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight,
and the earth was filled with violence.
12 And God saw the earth,
and behold, it was corrupt,
for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.
13 And God said to Noah,
“I have determined to make an end of all flesh,
for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth…
17 The flood continued forty days on the earth.
The waters increased and bore up the ark,
and it rose high above the earth.
18 The waters prevailed
and increased greatly on the earth,
and the ark floated on the face of the waters.
Genesis 6:5–13; 7:17–18 (ESV)
SONG
I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day
[Verse 1]
I heard the bells on Christmas day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men.
[Verse 2]
I thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along th’unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.
[Verse 3]
‘Til, ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day
A voice, a chime, a chant sublime,
Of peace on earth, good will to men.
[Verse 4]
And in despair I bowed my head:
“There is no peace on earth,” I said,
“For hate is strong, and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.”
[Verse 5]
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
“God is not dead, nor does He sleep!
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail,
With peace on earth, good will to men!”
BENEDICTION
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and through the rivers,
they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire
you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.
For I am the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
Isaiah 43:2-3
