PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP
“They shall make an ark of acacia wood… you shall overlay it with pure gold, inside and outside… You shall cast four rings of gold… You shall make poles of acacia wood…
There I will meet with you,
and from above the mercy seat,
from between the two cherubim
that are on the ark of the testimony,
I will speak with you about all that I will give you
in commandment for the people of Israel.

There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets of stone that Moses put there at Horeb, where the Lord made a covenant with the people of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt.

When the Philistines captured the ark of God,
they brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.
Then the Philistines took the ark of God
and brought it into the house of Dagon
and set it up beside Dagon.
And when the people of Ashdod
rose early the next day, behold,
Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground
before the ark of the Lord.
So they took Dagon and put him back in his place.
But when they rose early on the next morning,
behold, Dagon had fallen face downward
on the ground before the ark of the Lord,
and the head of Dagon and both his hands
were lying cut off on the threshold.
Only the trunk of Dagon was left to him.
This is why the priests of Dagon
and all who enter the house of Dagon
do not tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod
to this day.
The hand of the Lord was heavy
against the people of Ashdod,
and he terrified and afflicted them with tumors,
both Ashdod and its territory.
And when the men of Ashdod saw
how things were, they said,
“The ark of the God of Israel must not remain
with us, for his hand is hard against us
and against Dagon our god.”
So they sent and gathered together
all the lords of the Philistines and said,
“What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?”
They answered, “Let the ark of the God of Israel
be brought around to Gath.”
So they brought the ark of the God of Israel there.
But after they had brought it around,
the hand of the Lord was against the city,
causing a very great panic,
and he afflicted the men of the city,
both young and old,
so that tumors broke out on them.
So they sent the ark of God to Ekron.
But as soon as the ark of God came to Ekron,
the people of Ekron cried out,
“They have brought around to us the ark of
the God of Israel to kill us and our people.”
They sent therefore and gathered together
all the lords of the Philistines and said,
“Send away the ark of the God of Israel,
and let it return to its own place,
that it may not kill us and our people.”

SERMON
“You Can’t Touch This”
David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel,
thirty thousand.
2 And David arose and went with all the people
who were with him from Baale-judah
to bring up from there the ark of God,
which is called by the name of the Lord of hosts
who sits enthroned on the cherubim.
3 And they carried the ark of God on a new cart
and brought it out of the house of Abinadab,
which was on the hill.
And Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab,
were driving the new cart, 4 with the ark of God,
and Ahio went before the ark.
5 And David and all the house of Israel were
celebrating before the Lord,
with songs and lyres and harps
and tambourines and castanets and cymbals.
6 And when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon,
Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God
and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled.
7 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah,
and God struck him down there
because of his error,
and he died there beside the ark of God.
8 And David was angry because
the Lord had broken out against Uzzah.
And that place is called Perez-uzzah to this day.
9 And David was afraid of the Lord that day, and he said,
“How can the ark of the Lord come to me?”
10 So David was not willing to take
the ark of the Lord into the city of David.
But David took it aside
to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.
11 And the ark of the Lord remained in the house
of Obed-edom the Gittite three months,
and the Lord blessed Obed-edom
and all his household.
12 And it was told King David,
“The Lord has blessed the household of
Obed-edom and all that belongs to him,
because of the ark of God.”
So David went and brought up the ark of God
from the house of Obed-edom
to the city of David with rejoicing.
13 And when those who bore the ark of the Lord
had gone six steps,
he sacrificed an ox and a fattened animal.
14 And David danced before the Lord
with all his might.
And David was wearing a linen ephod.
15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up
the ark of the Lord with shouting
and with the sound of the horn.
