Welcome, we’re glad you’re here. Our vision echoes the Lord’s prayer: may it be “in the South Bay, as it is in heaven.” We yearn to see people flourishing in Jesus. Join us in the worship of our Lord.

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

The haughty looks of man shall be brought low,
and the lofty pride of men shall be humbled,
and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.
Isaiah 2:12

For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.
Luke 18:14b

You said in your heart,
    ‘I will ascend to heaven;
above the stars of God
I will set my throne on high…
I will make myself like the Most High.’
Isaiah 14:13-14

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.
Proverbs 12:15

If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
John 13:14

WELCOME & CALL TO WORSHIP

break forth into joyous song and sing praises!
Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,
with the lyre and the sound of melody!
Psalm 98:4-5

SONG

Hosanna (Praise is Rising)

[Verse 1]
Praise is rising
Eyes are turning to You
We turn to You
Hope is stirring
Hearts are yearning for You
We long for You

[Pre-Chorus]
‘Cause when we see You
We find strength to face the day
And in Your presence all our fears are
Washed away, washed away!

[Chorus 1]
Hosanna, Hosanna
You are the God who saves us
Worthy of all our praises

[Verse 2]
Hear the sound of
Hearts returning to You
We turn to You
In Your kingdom
Broken lives are made new
You make all things new

SONG

Forever Reign

[Verse 1]
You are good, You are good
When there’s nothing good in me
You are love, You are love
On display for all to see
You are light, You are light
When the darkness closes in
You are hope, You are hope
You have covered all my sin

[Verse 2]
You are peace, You are peace
When my fear is crippling
You are true, You are true
Even in my wandering
You are joy, You are joy
You’re the reason that I sing
You are life, You are life
In You death has lost its sting

[Chorus]
Oh, I’m running to Your arms
I’m running to Your arms
The riches of Your love
Will always be enough
Nothing compares to Your embrace
Light of the world forever reign

[Verse 3]
You are more, You are more
Than my words will ever say
You are Lord, You are Lord
All creation will proclaim
You are here, You are here
In Your presence I’m made whole
You are God, You are God
Of all else I’m letting go

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
My heart will sing
No other Name
Jesus, Jesus

SCRIPTURE READING

Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him,  and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Luke 14:7-11

SONG

In Christ Alone

[Verse 1]
In Christ alone, my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm

What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in all
here in the love of Christ I stand

[Verse 2]
In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save

‘Til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
here in the death of Christ I live

[Verse 3]
There in the ground, His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious day
Up from the grave He rose again

And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

[Verse 4]
No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny

No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
‘Til He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand

‘Til He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand

SERMON
“I Will Be King”

Now King David was old and advanced in years.
And although they covered him with clothes,
he could not get warm.
2 Therefore his servants said to him,

“Let a young woman be sought for my lord the king,
and let her wait on the king and be in his service.
Let her lie in your arms,
that my lord the king may be warm.”

3 So they sought for a beautiful young woman
throughout all the territory of Israel,
and found Abishag the Shunammite,
and brought her to the king.

4 The young woman was very beautiful,
and she was of service to the king
and attended to him, but the king knew her not.

5 Now Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself,
saying, “I will be king.”
And he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen,
and fifty men to run before him.

6 His father had never at any time displeased him
by asking, “Why have you done thus and so?”
He was also a very handsome man,
and he was born next after Absalom.

7 He conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah
and with Abiathar the priest.
And they followed Adonijah and helped him.

8 But Zadok the priest
and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada
and Nathan the prophet and Shimei and Rei
and David’s mighty men were not with Adonijah.

9 Adonijah sacrificed sheep, oxen,
and fattened cattle by the Serpent’s Stone,
which is beside En-rogel,
and he invited all his brothers, the king’s sons,
and all the royal officials of Judah,

10 but he did not invite Nathan the prophet
or Benaiah or the mighty men
or Solomon his brother.

11 Then Nathan said to Bathsheba
the mother of Solomon,
“Have you not heard that Adonijah
the son of Haggith has become king
and David our lord does not know it?

12 Now therefore come, let me give you advice,
that you may save your own life
and the life of your son Solomon.

13 Go in at once to King David, and say to him,
‘Did you not, my lord the king,
swear to your servant, saying,
“Solomon your son shall reign after me,
and he shall sit on my throne”?
Why then is Adonijah king?’

14 Then while you are still speaking with the king,
I also will come in after you
and confirm your words.” …

28 Then King David answered,
“Call Bathsheba to me.”
So she came into the king’s presence
and stood before the king.

29 And the king swore, saying, “As the Lord lives,
who has redeemed my soul out of every adversity,
30 as I swore to you by the Lord, the God of Israel,
saying, ‘Solomon your son shall reign after me,
and he shall sit on my throne in my place,’
even so will I do this day.”

31 Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the
ground and paid homage to the king and said,
“May my lord King David live forever!”

32 King David said, “Call to me Zadok the priest,
Nathan the prophet,
and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada.”
So they came before the king.

33 And the king said to them,
“Take with you the servants of your lord
and have Solomon my son ride on my own mule,
and bring him down to Gihon.

34 And let Zadok the priest
and Nathan the prophet
there anoint him king over Israel.
Then blow the trumpet and say,
‘Long live King Solomon!’

35 You shall then come up after him,
and he shall come and sit on my throne,
for he shall be king in my place.
And I have appointed him to be ruler
over Israel and over Judah.”

36 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king,
“Amen! May the Lord, the God
of my lord the king, say so.

37 As the Lord has been with my lord the king,
even so may he be with Solomon,
and make his throne greater
than the throne of my lord King David.”

38 So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet,
and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada,
and the Cherethites and the Pelethites
went down and had Solomon ride
on King David’s mule and brought him to Gihon.

39 There Zadok the priest took the horn of oil
from the tent and anointed Solomon.
Then they blew the trumpet, and all the people
said, “Long live King Solomon!”

40 And all the people went up after him,
playing on pipes, and rejoicing with great joy,
so that the earth was split by their noise…

49 Then all the guests of Adonijah trembled
and rose, and each went his own way.
50 And Adonijah feared Solomon.
So he arose and went
and took hold of the horns of the altar.

51 Then it was told Solomon, “Behold,
Adonijah fears King Solomon, for behold,
he has laid hold of the horns of the altar, saying,
‘Let King Solomon swear to me first that he
will not put his servant to death with the sword.’”

52 And Solomon said,
“If he will show himself a worthy man,
not one of his hairs shall fall to the earth,
but if wickedness is found in him,
he shall die.”

53 So King Solomon sent,
and they brought him down from the altar.
And he came and paid homage to King Solomon,
and Solomon said to him, “Go to your house.”
1 Kings 1:1–14, 28–40, 49–53 (ESV)

SONG

King of Kings

[Verse 1]
In the darkness we were waiting
Without hope, without light
‘Til from heaven You came running
There was mercy in Your eyes

To fulfill the law and prophets
To a virgin came the word
From a throne of endless glory
To a cradle in the dirt

[Chorus]
Praise the Father, praise the Son
Praise the Spirit, three in one
God of glory, Majesty
Praise forever to the King of Kings

[Verse 2]
To reveal the kingdom coming
And to reconcile the lost
To redeem the whole creation
You did not despise the cross

For even in your suffering
You saw to the other side
Knowing this was our salvation
Jesus for our sake you died

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
And the morning that You rose
All of heaven held its breath
Till that stone was moved for good
For the Lamb had conquered death

And the dead rose from their tombs
And the angels stood in awe
For the souls of all who’d come
To the Father are restored

And the Church of Christ was born
Then the Spirit lit the flame
Now this gospel truth of old
Shall not kneel, shall not faint

By His blood and in His name
In His freedom I am free
For the love of Jesus Christ
Who has resurrected me

[Chorus]

BENEDICTION

I waited patiently for the Lord;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
He drew me up from the pit of destruction,
    out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
    making my steps secure.

He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
and put their trust in the Lord.
Psalm 40:1-3
