PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
John 12:24-26

Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
Galatians 6:7-8

“No, there is no escape.  There is no heaven with a little of hell in it – no plan to retain this or that of the devil in our hearts or our pockets.  Out Satan must go, every hair & feather.”
– George MacDonald

To see the law by Christ fulfilled
And hear His pardoning voice,
Changes a slave into a child,
And duty into choice.
– William Cowper

I met a traveller from an antique land,
Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”
– Percy Shelley

WELCOME & CALL TO WORSHIP

The Lord has done great things for us;
we are glad.

Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
like streams in the Negeb!
Those who sow in tears
shall reap with shouts of joy!
He who goes out weeping,
bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
bringing his sheaves with him.

Psalm 126:3-6

SONG

Great Things

[Verse 1]
Come let us worship our King
Come let us bow at His feet
He has done great things

See what our Savior has done
See how His love overcomes
He has done great things
He has done great things

[Chorus]
Oh Hero of Heaven, You conquered the grave
You free every captive and break every chain
Oh God, You have done great things

We dance in Your freedom, awake and alive
Oh Jesus, our Savior, Your name lifted high
Oh God, You have done great things

[Verse 2]
You’ve been faithful through every storm
You’ll be faithful forevermore
You have done great things

And I know You will do it again
For Your promise is “Yes and amen”
You do great things
God, You do great things

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
Hallelujah God, above it all
Hallelujah God, unshakable
Hallelujah, You have done great things

[Chorus]

SONG

Give Me Faith

I need You to soften my heart
And break me apart
I need You to open my eyes
To see that You’re shaping my life

All I am
I surrender

Give me faith to trust what You say
That You’re good and Your love is great
I’m broken inside I give You my life

I need You to soften my heart
And break me apart
I need You to pierce through the dark
And cleanse every part of me

‘Cause I may be weak
But Your Spirit’s strong in me
My flesh may fail
My God You never will

SCRIPTURE READING
1 Corinthians 15:35-44, 50-58

35 But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?”36 You foolish person! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. 37 And what you sow is not the body that is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. 38 But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body. 39 For not all flesh is the same, but there is one kind for humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish. 40 There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is of one kind, and the glory of the earthly is of another.41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory.

42 So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. 43 It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. 44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body…

50 I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. 53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality.54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:

“Death is swallowed up in victory.”
55 “O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting?”

56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

SONG

Do It Again

[Verse 1]
Walking around these walls
I thought by now they’d fall
But You have never failed me yet

Waiting for change to come
Knowing the battle’s won
For You have never failed me yet

[Chorus]
Your promise still stands
Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness
I’m still in Your hands
This is my confidence, You’ve never failed me yet

[Verse 2]
I know the night won’t last
Your Word will come to pass
My heart will sing Your praise again

Jesus, You’re still enough
Keep me within Your love
My heart will sing Your praise again

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
I’ve seen You move, You move the mountains
And I believe, I’ll see You do it again
You made a way, where there was no way
And I believe, I’ll see You do it again

[Chorus]

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Women’s Casual Beach Gathering – Saturday, August 26th at 8AM. Bring your morning coffee and a beach chair and meet under the Hermosa Beach pier (as close to the waves as possible!) for casual conversation and encouraging fellowship with other KCC ladies. Most Hermosa parking meters are free until 10am, so it should be easy to find a spot; you can grab coffee at Java Man or Starbucks on your way to the sand. You can reach out to one of the coordinators (Shinobu, Bethany, or Madalyn) for this event HERE.

Groups & Serving – As we approach the Fall, we are seeking more group leaders, hosts, and teachers, who will gather others around sermon discussion questions, a book study, or another biblical topic. If you might be willing to serve in this way, contact Joe Brown or Jeff Kyle to talk about it. In addition, we are needing more volunteers to serve through Sunday set-up/clean-up, and in both our Children’s and Nursery Ministries. You can volunteer HERE.

Confession: I don’t think much about “global missions.” So what? We know God is building his church across centuries and continents and that he calls *us* to be a part of this Great Commission work. However, most of us don’t spend significant time praying for, actively supporting, or, frankly, giving much thought or care to what this call means for us and our families here in the South Bay. Join us for a 2-part conversation about God’s heart for people groups, calling to front-line workers (a.k.a. “missionaries”), and invitation for all believers (including you!) to partner in this work. We’ll meet on Sundays 10/22 & 10/29 at 8:30am. When you register HERE, please let us know if childcare would be helpful.

OFFERTORY

If you would like to give electronically, you may do so using the “Giving” tab at the bottom-right corner of the mobile app. There are also white baskets in the back of our worship space, where you can give via check, made out to King’s Cross Church, or cash.

SERMON
“Fruitless?”

Mark 4:1-20

1Again he began to teach beside the sea. And a very large crowd gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea, and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land.2 And he was teaching them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them:3 “Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it. 5 Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil. 6 And when the sun rose, it was scorched, and since it had no root, it withered away. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. 8 And other seeds fell into good soil and produced grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.” 9 And he said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

10 And when he was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables. 11 And he said to them, “To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in parables, 12 so that

“‘they may indeed see but not perceive,
and may indeed hear but not understand,
lest they should turn and be forgiven.’”

13 And he said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? 14 The sower sows the word. 15 And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them. 16 And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: the ones who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy. 17 And they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away. 18 And others are the ones sown among thorns. They are those who hear the word, 19 but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 20 But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.”

SONG

Build My Life

[Verse 1]
Worthy of every song we could ever sing
Worthy of all the praise we could ever bring
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe
We live for You

Jesus, the Name above every other name
Jesus, the only One who could ever save
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe
We live for You
Oh, we live for You

[Chorus]
Holy, there is no one like You
There is none beside You
Open up my eyes in wonder
And show me who You are
And fill me with Your heart
And lead me in Your love to those around me

[Verse 1]

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
I will build my life upon Your love
It is a firm foundation
And I will put my trust in You alone
And I will not be shaken

BENEDICTION

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

John 15:13-16
