PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

And do you seek great things for yourself?
Seek them not…
Jeremiah 45:5a

For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?
Luke 9:25

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Matthew 6:33

Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
Matthew 23:12

Set yourself earnestly to discover what you are made to do, and then give yourself passionately to the doing of it.
– Martin Luther King, Jr

Unless you know what you want, you can’t ask for it.
– Jeanne Segal

Ambition is an enemy to peace in the church. “Diotrephes loves to have pre-eminence.” And that fellow has spoiled many a happy church.
– Charles Spurgeon

Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither.
– CS Lewis

WELCOME & CALL TO WORSHIP

Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory,
for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!

Psalm 115:1

SONG

His Mercy is More

[Chorus]
Praise the Lord
His mercy is more
Stronger than darkness
New every morn’
Our sins they are many
His mercy is more

[Verse 1]
What love could remember
No wrongs we have done
Omniscient, all-knowing
He counts not their sum

Thrown into a sea
Without bottom or shore
Our sins they are many
His mercy is more

[Verse 2]
What patience would wait
As we constantly roam
What Father so tender
Is calling us home

He welcomes the weakest
The vilest the poor
Our sins they are many
His mercy is more

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
What riches of kindness
He lavished on us
His blood was the payment
His life was the cost

We stood ‘neath a debt
We could never afford
Our sins they are many
His mercy is more

[Chorus]

SONG

Good God

[Verse 1]
Be still my soul
Be still my soul
Be still and know my God is here
Be still my soul
Be still my soul
Be still and know my God is here

[Chorus]
All that I need to know is this
You are a good God
The Maker of Heaven calls me His
You are a good God
And Your heart beats in my chest
You are a good God
All that I have to do is rest
You are a good God

[Verse 2]
I won’t be afraid
I won’t be afraid
I won’t be afraid, my God is here
He will make a way
He will make a way
He will make a way, my God is here

[Chorus]

[Bridge 1]
You gave me Your eyes
You gave me Your heart
Your Spirit flows through my veins

[Bridge 2]
You gave me Your eyes
You gave me Your heart
You had a plan right from the start
I know who I am cause I know who You are
You are a good God

[Chorus]

CONFESSION OF FAITH

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Philippians 2:3-11

SONG

How Deep the Father’s Love For Us

[Verse 1]
How deep the Father’s love for us
How vast beyond all measure
That He would give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory

[Verse 2]
Behold the man upon a cross
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished

[Verse 3]
I will not boast in anything
No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom

SERMON
“Do For Me”
Mark 10:35-45

35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” 38 Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” 41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John.42 And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

SONG

Great is Our God

[Verse 1]
Come, let us praise Him
Let us kneel at the throne of our God
Through His Son our salvation was bought
With mercy and grace

Come, let us bow down
In His hands are the depths of the earth
With one voice we proclaim His great worth
Lord, our God

[Chorus]
And we will seek Him
Our Rock of Salvation
Morning by morning
With thanksgiving we come

And we will bow down
With creation we cry out
In daylight and darkness
We sing to the Lord

Great is our God
Great is our God
Great is our God

[Verse 2]
Lord of all nations
We will stand at the end of our days
In Your courts and declare Your great ways
In Spirit and Truth

We long for Your Kingdom
Bring Your thunder and gather the earth
All who tremble will tell of Your worth
Lord, our God

[Chorus]

BENEDICTION

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.

Jeremiah 29:11-14
