Welcome, we’re glad you’re here. Our vision echoes the Lord’s prayer: may it be “in the South Bay, as it is in heaven.” We yearn to see people flourishing in Jesus. Join us in the worship of our Lord.
PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP
And when he had removed him,
he raised up David to be their king,
of whom he testified and said,
‘I have found in David the son of Jesse
a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’
Acts 13:22
And I will set up over them one shepherd,
my servant David, and he shall feed them:
he shall feed them and be their shepherd.
Ezekiel 34:23

1 Chronicles 18:14
A Psalm of David.
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me,
from the words of my groaning?
O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.
Psalm 22:1
He will be great
and will be called the Son of the Most High.
And the Lord God will give to him
the throne of his father David…
Luke 1:32
The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ,
the son of David, the son of Abraham.
Matthew 1:1
WELCOME & CALL TO WORSHIP
and my mouth will declare your praise.
For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it;
you will not be pleased with a burnt offering.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
Psalm 51:15-17
SONG
This is Amazing Grace
[Verse 1]
Who breaks the power of sin and darkness
Whose love is mighty and so much stronger
The King of Glory, the King above all Kings
Who shakes the whole earth with holy thunder
and leaves us breathless in awe and wonder
The King of Glory, the King above all kings
[Chorus]
This is amazing grace
This is unfailing love
That you would take my place
That You would bear my cross
You laid down Your life
That I would be set free
Jesus I sing for
All that You’ve done for me
[Verse 2]
Who brings our chaos back into order
Who makes the orphan a son and daughter
The King of Glory, the King of Glory
Who rules the nations with truth and justice
shines like the sun in all of its brilliance
The King of Glory
The King above all Kings
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
Worthy is the King who conquered the grave
[Chorus]
SONG
Sovereign Over Us
[Verse 1]
There is strength within the sorrow
There is beauty in our tears
And you meet us in our mourning
With a love that casts out fear
You are working in our waiting
You’re sanctifying us
When beyond our understanding
You’re teaching us to trust
[Chorus]
Your plans are still to prosper
You have not forgotten us
You’re with us in the fire and the flood
Faithful forever, Perfect in love
You are sovereign over us
[Verse 2]
You are wisdom unimagined
Who could understand your ways
Reigning high above the heavens
Reaching down in endless grace
Youʼre the Lifter of the lowly
Compassionate and kind
You surround and You uphold me
Your promises are my delight
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
Even what the enemy means for evil
You turn it for our good
You turn it for our good and for your glory
Even in the valley You are faithful
Youʼre working for our good
Youʼre working for our good and for your glory
[Chorus]
SCRIPTURE READING
O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you,
as in a dry and weary land
where there is no water.
So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,
beholding your power and glory.
Because your steadfast love is better than life,
my lips will praise you.
So I will bless you as long as I live;
in your name I will lift up my hands.
My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food,
and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips,
when I remember you upon my bed,
and meditate on you in the watches of the night;
for you have been my help,
and in the shadow of your wings
I will sing for joy.
My soul clings to you;
your right hand upholds me.
But those who seek to destroy my life
shall go down into the depths of the earth;
they shall be given over to the power of the sword;
they shall be a portion for jackals.
But the king shall rejoice in God;
all who swear by him shall exult,
for the mouths of liars will be stopped.
Psalm 63
SONG
Before the Throne of God Above
[Verse 1]
Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea
A great High Priest whose name is Love
Whoever lives and pleads for me
My name is graven on His hands
My name is written on His heart
I know that while in heaven He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart
No tongue can bid me thence depart
[Verse 2]
When Satan tempts me to despair
And tells me of the guilt within
Upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end to all my sin
Because the sinless savior died
My sinful soul is counted free
For God the Just is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me
To look on Him and pardon me
[Chorus]
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Praise the One
Risen Son of God
[Verse 3]
Behold Him there the risen Lamb
My perfect spotless righteousness
The great unchangeable I Am
The King of glory and of grace
One with Himself I cannot die
My soul is purchased by His blood
My life is hid with Christ on high
With Christ my Savior and my God
With Christ my Savior and my God
[Chorus]

SERMON
“Choosing a King”
The Lord said to Samuel,
“How long will you grieve over Saul,
since I have rejected him
from being king over Israel?
Fill your horn with oil, and go.
I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I
have provided for myself a king among his sons.”
2 And Samuel said, “How can I go?
If Saul hears it, he will kill me.”
And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say,
‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’
3 And invite Jesse to the sacrifice,
and I will show you what you shall do.
And you shall anoint for me
him whom I declare to you.”
4 Samuel did what the Lord commanded
and came to Bethlehem.
The elders of the city came to meet him trembling
and said, “Do you come peaceably?”
5 And he said, “Peaceably;
I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.
Consecrate yourselves,
and come with me to the sacrifice.”
And he consecrated Jesse and his sons
and invited them to the sacrifice.
6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought,
“Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.”
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look
on his appearance or on the height of his stature,
because I have rejected him.
For the Lord sees not as man sees:
man looks on the outward appearance,
but the Lord looks on the heart.”
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab
and made him pass before Samuel.
And he said,
“Neither has the Lord chosen this one.”
9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by.
And he said,
“Neither has the Lord chosen this one.”
10 And Jesse made seven of his sons
pass before Samuel.
And Samuel said to Jesse,
“The Lord has not chosen these.”
11 Then Samuel said to Jesse,
“Are all your sons here?”
And he said, “There remains yet the youngest,
but behold, he is keeping the sheep.”
And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him,
for we will not sit down till he comes here.”
12 And he sent and brought him in.
Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes
and was handsome.
And the Lord said,
“Arise, anoint him, for this is he.”
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil
and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David
from that day forward.
And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
1 Samuel 16:1-13 (ESV)
COMMUNION
SONG
King of Kings
[Verse 1]
In the darkness we were waiting
Without hope, without light
‘Til from heaven You came running
There was mercy in Your eyes
To fulfill the law and prophets
To a virgin came the word
From a throne of endless glory
To a cradle in the dirt
[Chorus]
Praise the Father, praise the Son
Praise the Spirit, three in one
God of glory, Majesty
Praise forever to the King of Kings
[Verse 2]
To reveal the kingdom coming
And to reconcile the lost
To redeem the whole creation
You did not despise the cross
For even in your suffering
You saw to the other side
Knowing this was our salvation
Jesus for our sake you died
[Chorus]
[Verse 3]
And the morning that You rose
All of heaven held its breath
Till that stone was moved for good
For the Lamb had conquered death
And the dead rose from their tombs
And the angels stood in awe
For the souls of all who’d come
To the Father are restored
And the Church of Christ was born
Then the Spirit lit the flame
Now this gospel truth of old
Shall not kneel, shall not faint
By His blood and in His name
In His freedom I am free
For the love of Jesus Christ
Who has resurrected me
[Chorus]
BENEDICTION
O Lord, my heart is not lifted up;
my eyes are not raised too high;
I do not occupy myself with things
too great and too marvelous for me.
But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child is my soul within me.
O Israel, hope in the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore.
Psalm 131
