PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

“You are to speak to the people of Israel and say, ‘Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the Lord, sanctify you.
Exodus 31:13

“Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”
Psalm 46:10

“If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath,
from doing your pleasure on my holy day,
and call the Sabbath a delight
and the holy day of the Lord honorable;
if you honor it, not going your own ways,
or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly;
14 then you shall take delight in the Lord,
and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth;
I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father,
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
Isaiah 58:13-14

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Hebrews 10:24-25

“Our hearts will never rest until they rest in Thee.”
– Augustine

“Sabbath, in the first instance, is not about worship. It is about work stoppage. It is about withdrawal from the anxiety system of Pharaoh, the refusal to let one’s life be defined by production and consumption and the endless pursuit of private well-being.”
– Walter Brueggemann

“A great benefit of Sabbath keeping is that we learn to let God take care of us — not by becoming passive and lazy, but in the freedom of giving up our feeble attempts to be God in our own lives.”
– Marva Dawn

“Sabbath observance invites us to stop. It invites us to rest. It asks us to notice that while we rest, the world continues without our help. It invites us to delight in the world’s beauty and abundance.”
– Wendell Berry

and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

1 Peter 2:6

SONG

Good God

[Verse 1]
Be still my soul
Be still my soul
Be still and know my God is here
Be still my soul
Be still my soul
Be still and know my God is here

[Chorus]
All that I need to know is this
You are a good God
The Maker of Heaven calls me His
You are a good God
And Your heart beats in my chest
You are a good God
All that I have to do is rest
You are a good God

[Verse 2]
I won’t be afraid
I won’t be afraid
I won’t be afraid, my God is here
He will make a way
He will make a way
He will make a way, my God is here

[Chorus]

[Bridge 1]
You gave me Your eyes
You gave me Your heart
Your Spirit flows through my veins

[Bridge 2]
You gave me Your eyes
You gave me Your heart
You had a plan right from the start
I know who I am cause I know who You are
You are a good God

[Chorus]

SONG

You’re Welcome in This Place

[Verse 1]
You’re the King, this is your Kingdom
Jesus come
You’re the Father, this is your home
Abba come

If home is where the heart is
Come and dwell, come and dwell
I will open up to you

[Chorus]
You’re welcome in this place
You’re welcome in this place
Come and have your way in us
You’re welcome

[Verse 2]
You’re the Spirit, we’re flesh and bone
Breathe on us
Without your presence, we are nothing
Fill us up

If home is where the heart is
Come and dwell, come and dwell
I will open up to you

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
Now that you are here
we have everything we need
Now that you are here
we give everything we have

[Chorus]

SCRIPTURE READING

For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened. For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said,

“As I swore in my wrath,
‘They shall not enter my rest,’”

although his works were finished from the foundation of the world. For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.” And again in this passage he said,

“They shall not enter my rest.”

Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, again he appoints a certain day, “Today,” saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted,

“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts.”

For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on.  So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.

Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.

Hebrews 4:2-11

SONG

Leaning on the Everlasting Arms

[Verse 1]
What a fellowship, what a joy divine
Leaning on the everlasting arms
What a blessedness, what a peace is mine
Leaning on the everlasting arms

[Chorus]
Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms
Leaning, leaning, Leaning on the everlasting arms

[Verse 2]
Oh, how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way
Leaning on the everlasting arms
Oh, how bright the path grows from day to day
Leaning on the everlasting arms

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
What have I to dread, what have I to fear
Leaning on the everlasting arms
I have blessed peace with my Lord so near
Leaning on the everlasting arms

[Chorus]

SERMON
“The Lord of Rest”

One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. And the Pharisees were saying to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?” And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”

Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there with a withered hand. And they watched Jesus, to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him. And he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come here.”  And he said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent. And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.

SONG

Make Room

[Verse 1]
Here is where I lay it down
Every burden, every crown
This is my surrender,
This is my surrender

Here is where I lay it down
Every lie and every doubt
This is my surrender

[Chorus]
And I will make room for You
To do whatever You want to
To do whatever You want to
And I will make room for You
To do whatever You want to
To do whatever You want to

[Verse 2]
Here is where I lay it down
Every burden, every crown
This is my surrender
This is my surrender

Here is where I lay it down
Every lie and every doubt
This is my surrender

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
Shake up the ground of all my tradition
Break down the walls of all my religion
Your way is better
Your way is better

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
Here is where I lay it down
You are all I’m chasing now
This is my surrender
This is my surrender

Here is where I lay it down
You are all I’m chasing now
This is my surrender
This is my surrender
