PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called…

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.
Romans 11:29

For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness.

Of our life’s wild, restless sea.

– Dietrich Bonhoeffer

“God doesn’t call people who are qualified. He calls people who are willing, and then He qualifies them.”

WELCOME & CALL TO WORSHIP

But now thus says the Lord,
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.”

Isaiah 43:1

SONG

Did You Feel the Mountains Tremble?

[Verse 1]
Did you feel the mountains tremble
Did you hear the oceans roar
When the people rose to sing of
Jesus Christ, the risen One

Did you feel the people tremble
Did you hear the singers roar
When the lost began to sing of
Jesus Christ, the saving One

And we can see that, God, You’re moving
A mighty river through the nations
And young and old will turn to Jesus
Fling wide, you heavenly gates
Prepare the way of the risen Lord

[Chorus]
Open up the doors, let the music play
Let the streets resound with singing
Songs that bring Your hope
Songs that bring Your joy
Dancers who dance upon injustice

Verse 2
Do you feel the darkness tremble
As the saints join in one song
As the streams flow as one river
To wash away our brokenness

And we can see that, God, You’re moving
A time of jubilee is coming
When young and old return to Jesus
Fling wide, you heavenly gates
Prepare the way of the risen Lord

[Chorus]

And we can see that, God, You’re moving
A mighty river through the nations
And we can see that, God, You’re moving
A time of jubilee is coming

And we can see that, God, You’re moving
A mighty river through the nations
And we can see that, God, You’re moving
A time of jubilee is coming

When young and old return to Jesus
Fling wide, you heavenly gates
Prepare the way of the risen Lord

[Chorus]

Did you feel the mountains tremble
Did you hear the oceans roar
When the people rose to sing of
Jesus Christ, the risen One

SONG

Jesus Paid it All

[Verse 1]
I hear the Savior say
Thy strength indeed is small
Child of weakness, watch and pray
Find in Me thine all in all

[Chorus]
Jesus paid it all
All to Him I owe
Sin had left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow

[Verse 2]
Lord, now indeed I find
Thy power and Thine alone
Can change the leper’s spots
and melt the heart of stone

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
And when before the throne
I stand in Him complete
“Jesus died my soul to save”
My lips shall still repeat

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
Oh Praise the one who paid my debt
And raised this life up from the dead

APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
      creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
      He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
      was crucified, died, and was buried;
      he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
      He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
      the holy catholic* church,
      the communion of saints,
      the forgiveness of sins,
      the resurrection of the body,
      and the life everlasting. Amen.

*catholic means universal

SONG

What a Friend We have in Jesus

[Verse 1]
What a friend we have in Jesus
All our sins and griefs to bear
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer

Oh, what peace we often forfeit
Oh, what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer

[Verse 2]
Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged,
Take it to the Lord in prayer

Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share
Jesus knows our every weakness
Take it to the Lord in prayer

[Tag]
What a friend we have in Jesus
All our sins and griefs to bear
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Generous Justice, A Book Study –  Today, July 30, August 6, 13 and 20 from 12:30-2pm. Bring your own lunch. We’ll meet at Entradero Park in Torrance on Sundays after church. Join us in reading and discussing “Generous Justice” by Tim Keller. These sessions will be led by Mike Sunu. For more information and to register, click HERE.

Tonight: Hamlet in the Park – In addition to the performance, there is ample opportunity to arrive early (6pm) with chairs and picnics for fellowship. It’s a fun vibe! Look for parking and the Greek amphitheater behind the skate park at Wilson Park – 2200 Crenshaw Blvd, Torrance, CA 90501. Low beach chairs or blankets will work best, and even these days you should come prepared if it gets chilly. The host organization will ask for donations, but otherwise, admission is free. You can learn more about “Shakespeare by the Sea” and tonight’s event HERE.

Here Comes Fall – As we round the corner into Fall, we are seeking more group leaders, hosts, and teachers, who will gather others around sermon discussion questions or another biblical topic. If you might be willing to serve in this way, or if you have an idea you’d like to throw our way, contact Joe Brown or Jeff Kyle to talk about it. We look forward to what God will do among us in the Fall.

SERMON
“New Community”

The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.

Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea, and a great crowd followed, from Galilee and Judea 8 and Jerusalem and Idumea and from beyond the Jordan and from around Tyre and Sidon. When the great crowd heard all that he was doing, they came to him. 9 And he told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, lest they crush him, 10 for he had healed many, so that all who had diseases pressed around him to touch him. 11 And whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.” 12 And he strictly ordered them not to make him known.

13 And he went up on the mountain and called to him those whom he desired, and they came to him. 14 And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach 15 and have authority to cast out demons. 16 He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); 17 James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder); 18 Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot, 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

Mark 3:6-19

SONG

Is He Worthy?

[Verse 1]
Do you feel the world is broken? (We do)
Do you feel the shadows deepen? (We do)
But do you know that all the dark won’t stop the light from getting through? (We do)
Do you wish that you could see it all made new? (We do)

[Verse 2]
Is all creation groaning? (It is)
Is a new creation coming? (It is)
Is the glory of the Lord to be the light within our midst? (It is)
Is it good that we remind ourselves of this? (It is)

[Chorus]
Is anyone worthy? Is anyone whole?
Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll?
The Lion of Judah who conquered the grave
He is David’s root and the Lamb who died to ransom the slave

[Refrain 1]
Is He worthy? Is He worthy?
Of all blessing and honor and glory
Is He worthy of this?
He is

[Verse 3]
Does the Father truly love us? (He does)
Does the Spirit move among us? (He does)
And does Jesus, our Messiah hold forever those He loves? (He does)
Does our God intend to dwell again with us? (He does)

[Chorus]
Is anyone worthy? Is anyone whole?
Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll?
The Lion of Judah who conquered the grave
He is David’s root and the Lamb who died to ransom the slave

[Bridge]
From every people and tribe
Every nation and tongue
He has made us a kingdom and priests to God
To reign with the Son

[Refrain 2]
Is He worthy? Is He worthy?
Of all blessing and honor and glory
Is He worthy? Is He worthy?
Is He worthy of this?
He is!
Is He worthy? Is He worthy?
He is!
He is!

BENEDICTION

To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
