PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?”
Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king.
For this purpose I was born
and for this purpose I have come into the world
   — to bear witness to the truth.
Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”
John 18:37-38

So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing,
but rather that a riot was beginning, he took
water and washed his hands before the crowd,
saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood; see
to it yourselves.”
Matthew 27:24

“[Pilate] had been appointed procurator in order
that he might learn how to govern. On this account
he
constantly practiced extortion, and made
atrocious
sentences, and conspired against the
people.”

– Philo of Alexandria

“But Pilate undertook to bring those [idols] into
Jerusalem, and set them up there, which was
contrary to Jewish customs… When he perceived
that the multitude were in great agitation, he
was in fear that such a commotion might be
followed by some great mischief, and so he
ordered the [idols] to be carried back from
Jerusalem to Caesarea.”
– Josephus

May all your expectations be frustrated,
may all your plans be thwarted,
May all your desires be withered into nothingness –
that you may experience the powerlessness
and poverty of being a child,
and then you can sing and dance in the love of God
who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen
– Brennan Manning

WELCOME & CALL TO WORSHIP

For he grew up before him like a young plant,
    and like a root out of dry ground;
he had no form or majesty that we should look at
him,
and no beauty that we should desire him.
He was despised and rejected by men,
    a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
and as one from whom men hide their faces
he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Isaiah 53:2-3

SONG

Great Things

[Verse 1]
Come let us worship our King
Come let us bow at His feet
He has done great things

See what our Savior has done
See how His love overcomes
He has done great things
He has done great things

[Chorus]
Oh Hero of Heaven, You conquered the grave
You free every captive and break every chain
Oh God, You have done great things

We dance in Your freedom, awake and alive
Oh Jesus, our Savior, Your name lifted high
Oh God, You have done great things

[Verse 2]
You’ve been faithful through every storm
You’ll be faithful forevermore
You have done great things

And I know You will do it again
For Your promise is “Yes and amen”
You do great things
God, You do great things

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
Hallelujah God, above it all
Hallelujah God, unshakable
Hallelujah, You have done great things

[Chorus]

Good God

[Verse 1]
Be still my soul

Be still and know my God is here
Be still my soul

Be still and know my God is here

[Chorus]
All that I need to know is this
You are a good God
The Maker of Heaven calls me His
You are a good God
And Your heart beats in my chest
You are a good God
All that I have to do is rest
You are a good God

[Verse 2]
I won’t be afraid
I won’t be afraid
I won’t be afraid, my God is here
He will make a way
He will make a way
He will make a way, my God is here

[Bridge 1]
You gave me Your eyes
You gave me Your heart
Your Spirit flows through my veins

SONG

Let Your Glory Come Down

[Verse]
We will stand in the midst of Your glory
With our hands raised to heaven in praise
Let Your glory come down
Let Your glory come down
From Your throne

We will fall on our knees as we worship
With one voice, raised to heaven in praise
Let Your glory come down
Let Your glory come down
From Your throne

[Chorus]
Let Your church be drenched
With the rain of heaven
Falling from Your throne above

Let Your church be drenched
With the rain of heaven
Falling from Your throne above

Let Your glory come down
Let Your glory come down
From Your throne

[Verse]
We will fall on our knees as we worship
With one voice, raised to heaven in praise
Let Your glory come down
Let Your glory come down
From Your throne

[Chorus]

SERMON

“Handed Over to Pilate”
Mark 15:1-15

And as soon as it was morning,
the chief priests held a consultation with
the elders and scribes and the whole council.
And they bound Jesus and led him away
and delivered him over to Pilate.

And Pilate asked him,
“Are you the King of the Jews?”
And he answered him, “You have said so.”

And the chief priests accused him of many things.
And Pilate again asked him,
“Have you no answer to make?
See how many charges they bring against you.”
But Jesus made no further answer,
   so that Pilate was amazed.

Now at the feast he used to release for them
one prisoner for whom they asked.
And among the rebels in prison,
who had committed murder in the insurrection,
there was a man called Barabbas.

And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate
to do as he usually did for them.
And he answered them, saying,
“Do you want me to release for you
   the King of the Jews?”
10 For he perceived that it was out of envy
that the chief priests had delivered him up.

11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd
to have him release for them Barabbas instead.
12 And Pilate again said to them,
“Then what shall I do with the man
you call the King of the Jews?”
13 And they cried out again, “Crucify him.”

14 And Pilate said to them,
“Why? What evil has he done?”
But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.”

15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd,
   released for them Barabbas,
   and having scourged Jesus,
he delivered him to be crucified.

Mark 15:1-15 (ESV)

SONG

Good Good Father

[Verse1]
Oh, I’ve heard a thousand stories
of what they think you’re like
But I’ve heard the tender whisper
of love in the dead of night
And you tell me that you’re pleased
And that I’m never alone

[Chorus]
You’re a Good, Good Father
It’s who you are, It’s who you are
It’s who you are

And I’m loved by you
It’s who I am, It’s who I am
It’s who I am

[Verse 2]
Oh, I’ve seen many searching
for answers far and wide
But I know we’re all searching
For answers only you provide
Cause you know just what we need
Before we say a word

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
You are perfect in all of your ways
You are perfect in all of your ways
You are perfect in all of your ways to us

[Verse 3]
Oh, this love so undeniable
I, I can hardly speak
Peace so unexplainable
I, I can hardly think

As you call me deeper still
As you call me deeper still
As you call me deeper still
Into love, love, love

[Chorus]

BENEDICTION

Surely he has borne our griefs
    and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
    smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions;
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed.

Isaiah 53:4-5
