PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP
“The leprous person who has the disease shall wear torn clothes and let the hair of his head hang loose, and he shall cover his upper lip and cry out, ‘Unclean, unclean.’ He shall remain unclean as long as he has the disease. He is unclean. He shall live alone. His dwelling shall be outside the camp.
Leviticus 13:45-46
He had compassion for them because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd…
Matthew 9:36
When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
Matthew 14:14
Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.”
Matthew 15:32
And Jesus in pity touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight and followed him.
Matthew 20:34
And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.”
Luke 7:13
“I wish emotional bruises healed like physical ones.”
– Susan Colasanti
“You really need stitches,” she tells me.”Or you’re going to have a scar.” I try not to laugh. Stitches aren’t going to help. They fix skin, cuts, wounds, heal stuff on the outside. Everything broken with me is on the inside. “I can handle scars, especially one’s on the outside.”
– Jessica Sorenson, The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden
“Faith lives in a broken heart. ‘He cried out with tears, Lord, I believe.’ True faith is always in a heart bruised for sin. Saving faith always grows in a heart humbled for sin, in a weeping eye and a tearful conscience.”
– Thomas Watson
WELCOME & CALL TO WORSHIP
I will bless the Lord at all times;
his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul makes its boast in the Lord;
let the humble hear and be glad.
Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
and let us exalt his name together!
Psalm 34:1-3
SONG
Good God
[Verse 1]
Be still my soul
Be still my soul
Be still and know my God is here
Be still my soul
Be still my soul
Be still and know my God is here
[Chorus]
All that I need to know is this
You are a good God
The Maker of Heaven calls me His
You are a good God
And Your heart beats in my chest
You are a good God
All that I have to do is rest
You are a good God
[Verse 2]
I won’t be afraid
I won’t be afraid
I won’t be afraid, my God is here
He will make a way
He will make a way
He will make a way, my God is here
[Chorus]
[Bridge 1]
You gave me Your eyes
You gave me Your heart
Your Spirit flows through my veins
[Bridge 2]
You gave me Your eyes
You gave me Your heart
You had a plan right from the start
I know who I am cause I know who You are
You are a good God
[Chorus]
SONG
Death Was Arrested
[Verse 1]
Alone in my sorrow and dead in my sin
Lost without hope with no place to begin
Your love made a way to let mercy come in
When death was arrested and my life began
Ash was redeemed only beauty remains
My orphan heart was given a name
My mourning grew quiet, my feet rose to dance
When death was arrested and my life began
[Chorus]
Oh, Your grace so free, washes over me
You have made me new, now life begins with You
[Verse 2]
Released from my chains, I’m a prisoner no more
My shame was a ransom He faithfully bore
He canceled my debt and He called me His friend
When death was arrested and my life began
[Chorus]
Oh, Your grace so free, washes over me
You have made me new, now life begins with You
It’s Your endless love, pouring down on us
You have made us new, now life begins with You
[Verse 3]
Our Savior displayed on a criminal’s cross
Darkness rejoiced as though heaven had lost
But then Jesus arose with our freedom in hand
That’s when death was arrested and my life began
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
Oh, we’re free, free, forever we’re free
Come join the song of all the redeemed
Yes, we’re free, free, forever amen
When death was arrested and my life began
SCRIPTURE READING
Psalm 34:4-19
I sought the Lord, and he answered me
and delivered me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are radiant,
and their faces shall never be ashamed.
This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him
and saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the Lord encamps
around those who fear him, and delivers them.
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints,
for those who fear him have no lack!
The young lions suffer want and hunger;
but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
Come, O children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
What man is there who desires life
and loves many days, that he may see good?
Keep your tongue from evil
and your lips from speaking deceit.
Turn away from evil and do good;
seek peace and pursue it.
The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous
and his ears toward their cry.
The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,
to cut off the memory of them from the earth.
When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears
and delivers them out of all their troubles.
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
and saves the crushed in spirit.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
SONG
Here Again
[Verse 1]
Can’t go back to the beginning
Can’t control what tomorrow will bring
But I know here in the middle
Is the place where You promise to be
[Chorus]
I’m not enough unless You come
Will You meet me here again
‘Cause all I want is all You are
Will You meet me here again
[Verse 2]
As I walk now through the valley
Let Your love rise above every fear
Like the sun shaping the shadow
In my weakness Your glory appears
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
Not for a minute
Was I forsaken
The Lord is in this place
The Lord is in this place
Come Holy Spirit
Dry bones awaken
The Lord is in this place
The Lord is in this place
[Chorus]
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Summer Nights at The Point – Join us tonight (6/25) at 6:30pm for ice cream at Van Leeuwen. Additionally, we’d suggest making plans with friends to have dinner beforehand, maybe somewhere nearby (Hopdoddy isn’t bad!). Next week (7/2), we’ll meet at Avenue I on the Esplanade to watch the sunset. Thanks for coming out for Summer Nights. We’ve had a good turnout so far, and we hope you can join us.
Promotion Sunday – On July 9th, our children and youth ministries will be promoting all of the grades. Also in the worship service that day, we’ll recognize our graduates and talk more about our heart and vision for kids and students at King’s Cross.
Vessel Youth Group Summer Retreat– Our youth group will be having their summer retreat on July 30-Aug 1. The theme for our retreat is “King of Kings.” We can’t wait to see what God has in store for our youth and we’re so excited to spend this time together, growing in His word and in fellowship with one another. Registration for the event can be found here. If you have any questions, contact Johnny Park.
Thinking about the Fall – We’re planning to launch Fall community groups the first week of September, after Labor Day. We are seeking more group leaders, hosts, and teachers, who will gather others around sermon discussion questions or another biblical topic. If you might be willing to serve in this way, or if you have an idea you’d like to throw our way, contact Joe Brown or Jeff Kyle to talk about it. We look forward to what God will do among us in the Fall.
OFFERTORY
If you would like to give electronically, you may do so using the “Giving” tab at the bottom-right corner of the mobile app. There are also white baskets in the back of our worship space, where you can give via check, made out to King’s Cross Church, or cash.
SERMON
“Moved with Compassion”
Mark 1:38-45
And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.” And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.
And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once, and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter.
SONG
How He Loves
[Verse 1]
He is jealous for me
Loves like a hurricane, I am a tree
Bending beneath the weight
of His wind and mercy
When all of a sudden
I am unaware of these afflictions
eclipsed by glory
And I realize just how beautiful You are
And how great Your affections are for me
[Chorus 1]
Oh, how He loves us so
Oh, how He loves us
How He loves us all
[Verse 2]
He is jealous for me
Loves like a hurricane, I am a tree
Bending beneath the weight
of His wind and mercy
When all of a sudden
I am unaware of these afflictions
eclipsed by glory
And I realize just how beautiful You are
And how great Your affections are for me
[Chorus 2]
He loves us
Oh, how He loves us
Oh, how He loves us
Oh, how He loves
[Verse 3 ]
And we are His portion and He is our prize
Drawn to redemption by the grace in His eyes
If grace is an ocean, we’re all sinking
So Heaven meets earth like an unforeseen kiss
And my heart turns violently inside of my chest
I don’t have time to maintain these regrets
When I think about the way
[Chorus 2]
[Chorus 1]
