PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

For although they knew God, they did not honor
him as God or give thanks to him, but they
became futile in their thinking, and their foolish

SCRIPTURE READING

All who fashion idols are nothing,
   and the things they delight in do not profit.
Their witnesses neither see nor know,
   that they may be put to shame.

Who fashions a god or casts an idol
   that is profitable for nothing?
Behold, all his companions shall be put to shame,
   and the craftsmen are only human.
Let them all assemble, let them stand forth.
   They shall be terrified;
   they shall be put to shame together.

The ironsmith takes a cutting tool
   and works it over the coals.
He fashions it with hammers
   and works it with his strong arm.

And the rest of it he makes into a god, his idol,
   and falls down to it and worships it.
He prays to it and says,
   “Deliver me, for you are my god!”

They know not, nor do they discern,
   for he has shut their eyes, so that they cannot see,
   and their hearts, so that they cannot understand.

No one considers,
   nor is there knowledge or discernment to say,
“Half of it I burned in the fire;

“Keep Yourself From Idols”

¹³ I write these things to you
   who believe in the name of the Son of God,
   that you may know that you have eternal life.

¹⁴ And this is the confidence that we have toward him,
   that if we ask anything according to his will
   he hears us.
¹⁵ And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask,
   we know that we have the requests
   that we have asked of him.

¹⁶ If anyone sees his brother
   committing a sin not leading to death,
   he shall ask, and God will give him life —
to those who commit sins that do not lead to death.

There is sin that leads to death;
   I do not say that one should pray for that.
¹⁷ All wrongdoing is sin,
   but there is sin that does not lead to death.

¹⁸ We know that everyone who has been
   born of God does not keep on sinning,
but he who was born of God protects him,
   and the evil one does not touch him.

¹⁹ We know that we are from God,
   and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

   and has given us understanding,
   so that we may know him who is true;
