CATECHISM

New City Catechism #33-#34

Pastor:
Should those who have faith in Christ seek for their salvation through their own works, or anywhere else?

Congregation:
No, they should not, as everything necessary to salvation is found in Christ. To seek salvation through good works is a denial that Christ is the only Redeemer and Savior.

Pastor:
Since we are redeemed by grace alone through Christ alone, must we still do good works and obey God’s Word?

Congregation:
Yes, because Christ, having redeemed us by his blood, also renews us by his Spirit; so that our lives may show love and gratitude to God; so that we may be assured of our faith by the fruits; and so that by our godly behavior others may be won to Christ.

“The Demands of Grace”

My little children, I am writing these things to you
    so that you may not sin.
But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate
    with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

² He is the propitiation for our sins,
    and not for ours only
    but also for the sins of the whole world.

³ And by this we know that we have come to know him,
    if we keep his commandments.
⁴ Whoever says “I know him”
    but does not keep his commandments is a liar,
    and the truth is not in him,
⁵ but whoever keeps his word,
    in him truly the love of God is perfected.

By this we may know that we are in him:
